About:

The Alphabet Jumble app, is an app that has multiple games involved. It starts out helping kids familiarize themselves with the alphabet and then later learn how to put the letters in alphabetical order. I think it is super important for kids to know how to place random letter and so when I was contacted to review this app, I quickly downloaded Alphabet Jumble on  my iPhone 5 and had my little girl start playing.

Know Your ABC!
There are two levels of play. The first one is learning the letters and the second is for hearing the sounds. The child can choose to have the letters or sounds said in alphabetical order, or they can select what letter sound they like to hear. I was also very impressed that the child was easily allowed to go between upper and lowercase letters with a touch of the screen.
What I was not fond of,there was no option to hear them together. For example for a child, it wold be nice to have the option of hearing "A" says "ay".

Flash Card
Adorable ABC flashcards. Each card has a large picture in the middle with the letter on top and the word on the bottom. For letter "H", there was a large illustration of a horse with the "H" on the upper left corner and the word "Horse" spelled below the illustration. again it was easy for the child to go between uppercase and lowercase letters.  I liked that after selecting a letter, the voice would say the letter and what it was for. For example for the "H", the voice would say: "H, for horse". This is great because the child can now relate to the letter with a fun object.

Easy Jumble
This is one of the best introductions I have seen to alphabetizing. There are five letter mixed up on top. On the bottom, there are the outline of the order of the letters. The child has to start with the first one and alphabetize them. He is not only seeing the right order of the letters, but he gets to help put them together in a stress free manner.
For example, the letters or choice might be f,h,g,e,i. On the bottom, there are outline of letters e,f,g,h,i so as the child is arranging the letters, they can see the correct order. This is such a positive way to help a child learn a new skill.

Jumble A-Z
This is a lot more complex, but for the advanced child. The child has a whole mixed up alphabet and it is the childs job to organize the letters. He does this by dragging and dropping the letters in the correct order. It his is not challenging enough, there is a timer. I like this timer as it counts up. For example for the first time a child does it and it takes four minutes to correctly arrange the letters, encourage them to take three minutes next time. This is a great way for the child to build their own self esteem.

Jumble Challenge:
This game is great for the parent to see if the child has mastered the skill of alphabetizing letters. The setting is a body of water with a jumping fish. In less then a minute, the child has to arrange the letters. As the child gets better so do the letters. For example on level three, the child has to arrange the letters p, r, n, u, t, o, q, v, m, l, s before time runs out. It is a lot of fun to work agains the clock for a child who is very familiar with the letters. For a child who may not be as familiar but still likes a good challenge, I would recommend they sing the alphabet song as they play the game. It will help them build the confidence they need to succeed.

Pros:

  • Kids love the graphics
  • Letters and clear and easy to see
  • Great patterns and colors
  • Love how they break down from the levels from outlines to fully sorting the letters

Cons:

  • Some of the letters "touch" was slightly less sensitive
  • I would have liked a level where the child can hear the letter with the sound together

Bottom Line:

Alphabet Jumble is a really great app. It has a lot of amazing features as well as a grow with me idea. It starts off with familiarizing the child with the basic letters and eases the child through all the steps of alphabetizing. The very last game is for the child to familiar with the letters, they are ready to take on the timer and see if they can beat the jumping fish.

I like this app and would not only use it with my girls but also with my special need clients. It is well worth getting.
