This book did just what I had hoped it would do. It took a very complex subject and explained it in as simple terms as possible. Ive never had a formal course in biology, but I had watched all the lectures in an MIT Open Courseware course on the subject that had left me confused about a number of things. Of course, this book is not as comprehensive as a full course, but it did clarify a number of things for me. Many of the illustrations are much better than in the textbook that the MIT course was based on. Near the end of the book the author began giving specific study tips -- what things a student needs to be familiar with and what things they need to have down cold. In fact, the last chapter is entitled "Ten Ways to Improve Your Grade." I thought this a little strange, because the introduction does not mention this aspect of the book. It is done unobtrusively, so it shouldnt lessen a non-students enjoyment of the book. I mention it because it might be a big plus to some prospective readers.By JSD
I think this book would be great for someone with a non-science background who wanted to understand molecular and cell biology in a simple way. I however bought the book to serve as a quick-read adjunct to college level cell and molecular courses, and the book is totally inadequate for this purpose. The book is far too simplistic and surface oriented to be a study guide to undergraduate cell and molecular biology classes.By phoeberoo

1. Integumentary - This law includes the skin and its appendages (hair, nails, and specialized sweat- and oil-producing glands). Its traditional function is protection. For example, the skin protects the basal tissue from invasion by harmful bacteria, bars entry of most chemicals, and minimizes the chances of mechanical injury to basal structures.
2. Skeletal - The skeletal law includes bones and related tissues such as cartilage and ligaments, which furnish the body with a rigid framework for maintain and protection. The skeletal law also makes potential the movements of body parts.
3. Muscular - The muscular system, consisting of the private skeletal muscles, makes movement potential and generates the heat required for maintaining a constant core body temperature. Voluntary muscles are so called because their contractions are under known control. Involuntary or flat muscle tissue is found in blood vessel walls, other tubular structures and in the lining of hollow organs such as the stomach and small intestine. Cardiac muscle is the specialized muscle tissue of the heart.
4. Nervous - The nervous law is composed of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The nervous law makes potential communication between body functions, integration and control of body functions, and recognition of sensory stimuli.
5. Endocrine - The endocrine law is composed of specialized glands that secrete chemicals known as hormones directly into the blood. The organs of the endocrine law are sometimes called ductless glands. The endocrine law is similar to the nervous law in that it also provides communication, integration and control, but it does it in a slower and longer-lasting way by hormone secretion. Hormones are also the main regulators of metabolism, pregnancy and other body activities. They play foremost roles in fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-base equilibrium and power metabolism.
6. Cardiovascular (Circulatory) - The cardiovascular law includes the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries. The traditional function of this law is transportation. communication needs comprise continuous movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones, and other foremost substances. This law also helps regulate body temperature by distributing heat throughout the body and by assisting in retaining or releasing heat from the body by regulating blood flow near the body surface. Specialized cells of the circulatory law can also come to be complicated in immunity.
7. Lymphatic - The lymphatic law is composed of lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels and specialized lymphatic organs such as the tonsils, thymus and spleen. The lymph law moves fluids and inevitable large molecules from the tissue spaces around the cells and moves fat-related nutrients from the digestive tract back to the blood. It also plays a role in the functioning of the immune system, which is the defense mechanism of the body against disease.
8. Respiratory - The respiratory law includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs. Its traditional function is to permit the movement of air into the alveoli, which are the tiny thin-walled sacs of the lungs. In these sacs, oxygen from the air is exchanged for carbon dioxide, a waste product, which is then carried to the lungs by the blood so that it can be eliminated from the body. The respiratory law is also complicated in regulating the acid-base equilibrium of the body.
9. Digestive - The digestive law is composed of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anal canal (primary organs), as well as the teeth, salivary glands, tongue, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and appendix (secondary organs). All of the organs of the digestive law work together to ensure proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.
10. Urinary - The urinary law includes kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The traditional function of this law is the elimination of waste from the body. Other organs of the body are also complicated in the elimination of body wastes, such as the lungs and skin.
11. Reproductive (consisting of a male subdivision and a female subdivision) - The pregnancy law is composed of gonads (testes), vas deferens, prostate, penis and scrotum in the male, and gonads (ovaries), uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and mammary glands in the female. The purpose of this law is the procreation of life, insuring survival of humankind.

Ligaments and Tendons of the FOOT


The large Achilles tendon is the most important tendon for walking, running, and jumping. It attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone to allow us to raise up on our toes. The posterior tibial tendon attaches one of the smaller muscles of the calf to the underside of the foot. This tendon helps support the arch and allows us to turn the foot inward. The toes have tendons attached that bend the toes down (on the bottom of the toes) and straighten the toes (on the top of the toes). The anterior tibial tendon allows us to raise the foot. Two tendons run behind the outer bump of the ankle (called the lateral malleolus) and help turn the foot outward.
Many small ligaments hold the bones of the foot together. Most of these ligaments form part of the joint capsule around each of the joints of the foot. A joint capsule is a watertight sac that forms around all joints. It is made up of the ligaments around the joint and the soft tissues between the ligaments that fill in the gaps and form the sac.

Wrinkles and folds on the brain
One of the first things people notice about the human brain is how convoluted its surface is. Instead of being smooth and nearly featureless like a kidney or spleen, the cerebral cortex (the thin layer of gray matter forming the outer surface of the brain) is chock-full of wrinkles and folds. Click on the image above for a larger view.Technically, each crevice is called a sulcus (pl. sulci) and each ridge between the crevices is called a gyrus (pl. gyri). Sulci and gyri are simply a way of increasing the surface area of the cerebral cortex (and therefore the number of neurons) without greatly expanding the size of the skull. Good thing, too - if our skulls were much bigger, they wouldnt be able to squeeze through the birth canal and C-sections would become the norm. Not to mention that those enormous heads would make us look like Hollywood aliens.
There are perhaps 30 or so named sulci and gyri, but learning to identify them - a time-honored task of every medical student - isnt as easy as it might sound. It isnt true that if youve seen one brain, youve seen them all. Although the total surface area of the cortex is roughly the same in all people, there are large variations in the size of particular areas. Whether these differences in area are related to differences among individuals in various skills and functional capacities is largely unknown (but there have been a few intriguing studies, such as this one and this one).
For the sake of all those sleep-deprived med students, why cant we have a brain that looks more like, say, a howler monkeys?
So nice and smooth, almost no sulci or gyri to memorize. Actually, we humans start out wrinkle-free early in development. Check out this brain from a fetus at 22 weeks:
As neurons continue to divide, grow, and migrate, the cortex folds in on itself, forming a recognizable but unique pattern of bumps and grooves. Unless you happen to have lissencephaly. Children born with lissencephaly (which means "smooth brain") are severely retarded and many die before the age of 2.So we should be happy with our brain wrinkles. Finally, heres a quiz. Compare the brain below to the brain at the top of this post. Whats wrong with it?
Answer: nothing, if youre a chimpanzee. Clearly, there are anatomical differences between a chimpanzee brain and a human brain, particularly in the size of the prefrontal cortex (the front part of the cerebral hemispheres).
